The presentation at the 9 March Monthly Meeting will be provided by Paul Ireland via Zoom from the UK. Paul provided a very interesting talk at the August 2022 Monthly Meeting based on his book and many technical articles on "Modern Petrol and Classic Cars – The Manchester XPAG Tests".
The March presentation is about how an engine runs - "suck, squeeze, bang and blow". This is far more interesting than you may imagine. It is applicable to all engines, old and new and can help people understand what is going on under their bonnets.
Paul Ireland was 16 when he bought his first car, a 1949 MG TC. Although his career has been desk-based after a PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics, his family are mostly "proper" engineers, and Paul has always maintained and restored his cars himself. After tetra-ethyl lead was removed from gasoline in the late 1980s, his MG didn't run as well as he remembered, and he spent many years investigating the whys, hows, and wherefores. Eventually this led to a study by the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at his alma mater, Manchester University, with support of faculty and a team of six students; the Federation of British Historical Vehicle Clubs; various MG groups; and oil and other industries; they all contributed to his project, and the findings are now published in this book, "Classic Engines, Modern Fuel – The Problems, The Solutions".
Paul donates any profits from his books and technical presentations to his charity, supporting school children in Kideleko, Tanzania. After the August 2022 presentation, the Club Committee agreed to make an ex-gratia payment of £100 to Paul's charity. The money bought much needed supplies for the children.
