MG TYme In Canberra 2016

August 2016 Update

Our very special guest speaker, Ms Vicki Humphrey

One of the highlights of each MG TYme event is our celebration dinner. Our dinner is not just a ‘quick bistro alternate serve’; but it is something that we put a lot of effort into making a very special evening. This year we are delighted to announce that our guest speaker at the dinner will be Ms Vicki Humphrey, Head of Conservation at the National Museum of Australia. One of the many things that Vicky is responsible for is the Museum’s vehicle collection. Vicky will focus her talk to us on the Museum’s vehicle collection including what’s in it, and how the Museum approaches the conservation and presentation of the vehicles that are collected and displayed.

Vicki’s talk at our dinner will support our MG TYme 2016 display at the National Museum of Australia on Saturday 8 October 2016. We will have a premier display location at the Museum, and we will be featured by the Museum.

June 2016 update

Just another reason to come to MG TYme 2016

On the Saturday of MG TYme 2016 (8 October 2016) our display will be at the National Museum of Australia.  We will have an absolutely premier location, and we wil be featured by the Museum.

So what’s on at the Museum when we will be there?  The answer is the blockbuster special exhibition on loan from the UK:  2 million years of human history — in one room.  The exhibition is about exploring the history of humanity — how we have shaped the world, and how the world has shaped us.  The promotion says: … Witness compelling stories expressed through a beautiful collection of artefacts from across the globe. A History of the World in 100 Objects is based on the acclaimed BBC radio series by former British Museum director Neil MacGregor. It comes to Australia after touring the Middle East and Asia. The exhibition celebrates the distinctive power of the things that we make and the stories they tell, from Africa and the Americas to Asia and Europe. These carefully chosen inventions and artworks reveal the distinctive and unique stories and the shared humanity, from two million years ago to the present. Functional artefacts such as early stone tools are on show alongside monumental sculptures, religious icons and contemporary works of art. The National Museum will add a 101st object to the exhibition to mark a point on our journey through history.  More information is here: http://www.nma.gov.au/exhibitions/history_of_the_world

So make the most of this exceptional opportunity to see A History of the World in 100 Objects in Australia.  The best way – and it includes free parking right outside the Museum (!!) – is to register for MG TYme.

April 2016 Update

In this month’s update the organising team wish to advise that the Registration Form has been updated to a ‘Word’ document. This responds to a small number of enquiries where registrants advised some difficulty in managing the ‘pdf’ document and having it automatically submit to the organisers. So we have reverted to a slower, more manual, registration form that will allow you to save the ‘Word’ document and then electronically send it as an attachment; or print the document and mail it. We hope that this makes the process simpler for everyone.

Having reverted to a slower system, the organisers wish to ensure that no-one has been caught in the change. When you register you will receive an acknowledgement by email or mail from the organising team. If you have registered but have not received an acknowledgement would you please contact Brian Calder on 0434 307742 or by email to mgtyme@mgcccanberra.org.au

Now for the event news. Full registration for the event is just $95 for the first registrant and $85 for each additional registrant. Full registration includes the welcome function at the Mercure at Braddon on the Friday evening, a copy of the glossy souvenir event program, a quality event memento, the display on the Saturday morning at the National Museum of Australia, the 3-course celebration dinner at the Mercure on the Saturday night with our special guest speaker, and lunch on the Sunday run which will start at Canberra’s award-winning Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston.

Our display lakeside on Saturday 8 October 2016 will be at the National Museum of Australia. In 2016 the NMA will have ‘çars’ as a theme, and they will partner MG TYme by giving us top billing for a fantastic lakeside place for our display. We are very hopeful that the SS Enterprise will be steamed up on the day as a special treat for you for an optional cruise on the lake. If you wish to see Floriade, then we will arrange transport for you to and from the Floriade entrance. On Saturday evening will go back to the Mercure for a gala dinner with a very special guest speaker. We are hopeful that we can announce the details of our 2016 TYme guest speaker very soon.

February 2016 – Update

Greetings MG T Type and MG Y Type enthusiasts

Each MG TYme we try to do something just a little different, while also building on what we think is already a successful program.

So what will be different about MG TYme this year?  Well, this year we are partnering with the National Museum of Australia for our display. This means that our event is being promoted by the National Museum as an event on their 2016  program. We will have the most fabulous lakeside display area and the opportunity for you to browse the very many interesting displays at the Museum. There are just too many to detail here, whether your interest is Australia’s motoring heritage or our history in general. We also have great hopes that the Museum will fire up their magnificent paddle steamer Enterprise for an optional lake cruise for us   http://www.nma.gov.au/collections/highlights/paddle-steamer-enterprise   Fingers are really crossed for this one!

Also different this year is that we will be using the heritage Mercure Hotel in Braddon as our event-central. For those of you have been to MG TYme’s before, the Brassey is no longer a hotel and we have had to move to somewhere that we think is equally good, and in keeping with MG TYme.  The Mercure is just a short walk from the War Memorial.  We have reserved rooms at a special rate at the Mercure, but you can also stay anywhere you choose of course.

And what’s not changing?  MG TYme is a socially oriented, low cost, fun event that is run during Canberra’s Floriade festival, and as usual, we will make sure that there is plenty of interest over the weekend for navigators and co-drivers. We will have a gala dinner at the Mercure with an interesting guest speaker, and on the Sunday we will have a lunch-run to an interesting destination.  Most of all however, what is not changing is the very warm and friendly welcome you will receive from our Club members.  We are proud of our Club and proud of our city, and we really enjoy the company of all MG T and Y Type enthusiasts on this particular weekend.

So what is there to do?  At some stage you will need to register for the event so that we know that you are coming.  This is done through our Club web site here:   http://mgcccanberra.org.au/?page_id=1006  or I can separately mail or email the information to you on request.  You will also need to book your accommodation.  The Registration form  has the contact for the Mercure http://www.mercure.com/gb/hotel-5509-mercure-canberra/index.shtml  and some other options for you also.

Finally, would you please ‘spread the word’ about MG TYme in Canberra 2016.  MG TYme is an event for all T and Y Type enthusiasts, and as we have always promoted,  this does not mean that you wont be just as welcome if you are not actually driving a T or Y Type. It is an event for enthusiasts. Please spread the word both in your Club and to every T or Y Type enthusiast that you know.

So I do hope to see you in Canberra in October. It will be a great pleasure to welcome you to our event. If you have any questions, I will be happy to respond.

Best regards
